NSW lockdown laws tightened after emergency cabinet meeting

New lockdown rules have been approved by the NSW Government after an emergency cabinet meeting to address the growing number of coronavirus infections in the state.

Under the new rules, agreed to on Friday night, all residents of Greater Sydney will now need a permit to leave the region, 9News can confirm.

The measure was raised earlier in the week to stop people travelling to a second residence, sometimes a holiday home, outside of locked-down Sydney.

Restrictions have also been tightened further for people living in the 12 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of concern around Greater Sydney, including Bayside, Blacktown, Burwood, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool, Parramatta, Strathfield, and areas of Penrith councils.

Anyone living in those LGAs who is taking part in a singles bubble must now need to formally register the name of their singles buddy with authorities.

The nominated pair must now also live within five kilometres of each other.

The change comes after NSW recorded 390 new local cases on Friday, another record broken in the current outbreak.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller and Police Minister David Elliott made the case for the tightening of lockdown restrictions at another crisis meeting earlier in the week.

There were concerns that the virus was being spread into regional NSW in part from people leaving Greater Sydney to visit their second residence.

Other measures discussed earlier in the week included a request for additional ADF support in NSW.

More is expected to be announced on the lockdown update on Saturday.
